  1. Case Study

In The Mary Kay Way, Mary Kay Ash, founder of Mary Kay cosmetics, explains the importance of modesty in the business world. "A leader must present a good example in appearance as well as work habits. Image is important. We’re in the beauty business, so we always want to project a good image. Independent Beauty Consultants are self-employed, independent business owners. Therefore they have the right to wear whatever they choose. So again, it’s up to the Sales Directors to lead by example. When a Sales Director dresses impeccably, this clearly reminds people that proper dress will enhance the image of a beauty expert. I take pride in the fact that women who represent Mary Kay have always followed this practice. As for myself, even if I must make a quick weekend or late-night stop at the office, I have always been very particular about what I wear because I feel it’s important for me to set an example.
"I also refuse to receive visitors to my home unless I look my best. As Founder of a cosmetics company, I feel I must project a certain image. And for this reason, if I’m not presentable, I simply will not answer my door. I’ve even had to limit a favorite pastime— gardening. I don’t feel it would be appropriate to be seen in my yard covered with mud." (Ash, The Mary Kay Way, pp. 82-83)

  2. Advice

“1. Look at how those in the positions to which you aspire are dressed and groomed, then follow their lead.
“2. Dress appropriately for the occasion, whatever it is, including everyday work. When in doubt, slightly overdressing is prudent; being noticeably underdressed, at least for most people most of the time, is unbearably uncomfortable.
“3. Conservative styles and colors in clothing as well as conservative grooming will never be wrong, at least in most business circles.” (King, The Unwritten Laws, 86-87)

  3. Advice

“Clothing, regardless of style, should be clean, well-fitting, and in good condition.
“Hair and nails should be clean and well-kept, again regardless of style.
“Your good personal hygiene will be appreciated by your colleagues.
“Perfumes and colognes should be used sparingly, if at all, in the workplace.
“Men should pay particular attention to shaving habits and trimming of beards and mustaches. Others can’t help but notice poor upkeep, even if you don’t.” (King, The Unwritten Laws of Business, 87)
